The struggle of finding a sponsored job — and how to beat it
If you've spent months applying in the Netherlands and heard nothing back, it may not be your CV. It's often that you're applying to companies that legally can't hire you — and no one told you.
Why it's so hard
Under Dutch immigration law, most non-EU professionals need an employer that is an IND-recognised sponsor to get a work visa. Fewer than 0.5% of Dutch companies are on that register. The rest can't sponsor — no matter how perfect you are for the role.
The catch: job boards don't flag who can sponsor, many sponsoring employers don't advertise on the big platforms, and the official IND register is a plain list of company names with no jobs attached. So the information you need is real, but scattered and hard to act on.
The mistakes that cost months
- Spraying applications everywhere. Volume feels productive, but applying to non-sponsors is wasted effort.
- Trusting "visa sponsorship" filters. They're often inaccurate or empty for the Dutch market.
- Never checking the register. A 30-second check tells you whether a company can sponsor at all.
- Applying late. Recognised-sponsor roles get a lot of qualified applicants; the first few days matter.
A simple system that works
- Start from who can sponsor. Filter to recognised sponsors first, then look at roles — not the other way around.
- Match to your field and level. Focus on a realistic shortlist instead of everything.
- Apply early and directly. Go straight to the employer's posting; be among the first in.
- Track and follow up. Keep a simple list of where you applied and when.
