What is an IND recognised sponsor?

4 min read · Updated 2026

It's the single term that decides whether a Dutch company can hire you as an international. Here's what it means in plain English.

The definition

The IND (Immigration and Naturalisation Service) is the Dutch government body that handles residence permits. A recognised sponsor is a company the IND has approved to sponsor work or study permits. For routes like the Highly Skilled Migrant scheme, the employer must hold this status to hire non-EU talent.

The public register

The IND keeps a public register of every recognised sponsor — thousands of companies across the country. It's free to view on ind.nl. The catch: it's a list of company names only. There are no jobs attached, no filters by field, and no link to who's actually hiring.

Why it matters for your search

If a company isn't a recognised sponsor, it generally can't get you a work permit — regardless of how qualified you are. Checking the register before you apply saves you from chasing roles that can never lead to a visa.

How to check a company

Important: being on the register means a company can sponsor — not that every vacancy it posts is eligible. Sponsorship is decided per role, so always confirm with the employer.
