The orientation year (zoekjaar): your year to find work
If you've recently graduated, the orientation year may be the most valuable permit you can get — a full year to live in the Netherlands and find a job, with no employer needed up front.
What it is
The orientation year (officially the "orientation year for highly educated persons", often called zoekjaar) is a residence permit that lets eligible graduates stay in the Netherlands for up to a year to look for work — or start a business. Crucially, during this year you can work without a separate work permit, which makes you far easier for employers to hire.
Who's eligible
- Recent graduates of a Dutch higher-education programme, or
- Graduates of a qualifying top-ranked university abroad (within a set period after graduating), and
- Applicants who apply within the allowed window after completing their studies.
Why it's such an advantage
During the orientation year you don't need a recognised sponsor to start working — the employer doesn't have to sponsor a permit for that period. That removes the biggest barrier and lets you prove yourself on the job, which makes the next step much easier.
How to make the year count
- Start applying immediately — a year goes fast.
- Target recognised sponsors anyway, so you can transition to the Highly Skilled Migrant permit before the year ends.
- Line up the switch early: ask employers whether they'll sponsor you after the orientation year.
